Some people think that a sense of competition in children should be encouraged. Others believe that children who are taught to cooperate rather than compete become more useful adults. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Gone are those days when parents used to send their children to the school to attain knowledge and serve humanity. The schools used to impart knowledge and train the pupil so that they can work for the welfare of the society. But now children are being taught that life is a race. Since childhood they are given lessons on how to compete in each and every aspect of their life.
Some people believe that children should be encouraged to compete. There is a well-known saying that survival of the fittest which is now the principle of everyone’s life. With the growing population, unemployment and poverty, there is a dire need to teach and encourage children to compete with others in the same race in order to attain and maintain a secure position. These lessons start from the very first years of child’s learning when admissions in Nursery or Kindergarten are given on the basis of merit or pre-admission tests and interviews. Therefore, in order to survive in this fast moving world, it becomes very important to inculcate the skills of competition in every child.

On the other hand, there is another school of thought. Some people believe that children should be taught to cooperate rather than competing. Competition can be seen in each and every walk of life. Not only in the field of education or employment but the sense of competition has nested in the minds of the people who try to compare with their friends or relatives as well in terms of luxuries, social status, self-identity and quality of living. Surprisingly, some people even compare their child’s innocence, intellectual status, skills and achievements with others. All this puts an adverse effect on the child’s psychology. Children lack the feeling of cooperation and team spirit which in long run can hinder their progress. Children would become unsocial, introvert and mechanical. As we know that children are the future of any country therefore, teaching them to cooperate, help and work collectively can help them to reach success easily.

According to me, man is a social animal and society runs by cooperation, adjustments and helping others. Man cannot live his life all alone. Therefore, since childhood, children should be taught to cooperate, help others and work for the betterment of the society.
